Kindle for At Risk Kids is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Fort Lauderdale which provides and promotes the use of e-readers to at-risk children in the delinquency and dependency court systems. We work to help make available the vital benefits of reading and literacy to at-risk youth.

E-readers are rapidly and increasingly changing the way the world reads and encouraging research is being reported. A comprehensive study by the National Literacy Trust entitled 'The Impact of ebooks on the Reading Motivation and Reading Skills of Children and Young People' reports noted improvements in reading ability by youth who use e-readers, and that use of e-readers nearly doubled their perception that reading is "cool". This presents promising opportunity for delinquency and dependency courts to meaningfully encourage reading and to promote increased literacy.

The benefits of reading by youth are multitudinous: neurological, educational, psychological, social, and linguistic. Important developmental stages are present at ages 6-10, the "learning to read" stage; thereafter at ages 11-13 (and beyond), the "reading to learn" stage. Boosting the prospects for at-risk children during these highly consequential developmental years, affordable e-readers can provide meaningful opportunity for their personal and intellectual growth.

Kindle for At Risk Kids e-readers have a preloaded library composed of 25 e-books which have been selected as edifying and quality works in the public domain (and can be expanded or modified):

"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him."
